When you think of straightening teeth, do you think of those uncomfortable, unattractive metal wires of the past? You may be glad to know that those days are over! If you have issues with gapped teeth, an overbite, underbite, open bite, crossbite, or overly crowded teeth, Invisalign clear aligners may be the solution for you.
Invisalign aligners are made of a proprietary material called SmartTrack®. They are custom-made for your mouth and fit snugly over the teeth. Because they appear nearly invisible, it’s hardly even noticeable – to others or yourself – that you are straightening your smile.
The aligners of the Invisalign system are designed to use the right amount of pressure at the right place at the right time to shift your teeth slightly, moving them horizontally or vertically. In some cases, the aligners can even rotate teeth when needed. After an initial consultation, your doctor will create a custom treatment plan to show you how your teeth will move. You can even preview what your new smile will look like before you start the treatment. You’ll typically start using a new set of aligners every week, wearing them for 20 to 22 hours a day—only taking them out to eat and to brush and floss. You’ll need to visit the dentist about every six weeks to check on the progress of your smile.
The average Invisalign case takes about 12 months for adults, though the length of treatment depends on the severity of the case. Your Katy, TX doctor will be able to provide you with an estimate of how long your case will take. Treatment time for a teen patient may vary. After the completion of the Invisalign treatment, it’s recommended that you wear a retainer to keep your new smile in position.
